Swimming Gunnedah’s Liam Novley may have notched up some wins on Sunday at the 2018 Tamworth City Long Course Qualifying Carnival but they didn’t come easy for the 17-year-old.
With Gunnedah’s 50-metre pool out of action, Gunnedah swimmers have been training in the 25-metre pool and Novley was just one competitor who had to transition back into 50-metre racing.
“I’m always looking for the wall. I’ve got to go extra – got to go twice as far,” he said.
“We’re training in the 25-metre pool, so the fitness is a bit down but give it the rest of the year and I’ll get up there.”

While Novley said his fitness caught up with him by the end of the day, it didn’t stop him from doing some good work in the pool.
The swimmer scored several wins including the senior Dash For Cash where the fastest seven 50-metre freestyle swimmers on the day face off.
“It was pretty good. It was pretty tough. I'm a bit stuffed,” Novley said of the Dash For Cash.
“I think everyone was pretty close in the end, they're all pretty quick.”
Following the successful day, Novley is now turning his attention to the 2018 NSW Country Regional Meet in Port Macquarie.
The meeting will be held on January 27-28 and Novley expected it to be tough.
“I’m not expecting to be up there but I’ll try my hardest – try and get something from it,” Novley said.
Novley also said this year may be a bit of a swansong for him.
