Driver safety and public health regulations the focus for Gunnedah police over the holiday period

Road safety is one of the biggest priorities for police during the next few weeks - particularly after a year of border restrictions - with many people eager to travel across the state to visit family and friends or go on a holiday.

As is the case every year, Gunnedah police will be putting a particular focus on fatigue, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, speeding and the use of mobile phones behind the wheel.

Gunnedah Police Inspector Michael Wurth said it's not just the safety of the public they're on the look out for, it's the safety of the vehicles.

"Before people head off on holidays, they should take the time to ensure their vehicles are safe," Inspector Wurth said.

"Ensure tyres and brakes are in good conditions, that all lights and indicators are working correctly and if inclement weather is predicted in the area to a travelling to or through, that good quality wiper blades are fitted."

The busiest period is from December 23, 2020 to January 3, 2021 and that's when double demerits will be in force.

"Locally, all police will be employing normal road safety tactics of high visibility and enforcement of road laws in higher numbers than normally seen throughout the year," Inspector Wurth said.

"We might expect higher numbers our roads due to the lowering of border restrictions but people should ensure they plan their trips and reduce travelling at times they would normally be sleeping to reduce the effects of fatigue."

Police also have the added responsibility this year of ensuring public gatherings are not in breach of Public Health regulations due to COVID-19 and Inspector Wurth said they will be remaining vigilant in that regard.

"This will be a time when people may be tempted to exceed permissible numbers but the community are reminded not to be complacent and ruin the good work that the community, as a whole, has achieved over a considerable period of time," he said.
