Gunnedah police were first alerted to the incident on Thursday, December 10, after reports a Mitsubishi Triton utility was found submerged in the Namoi River, in an isolated area behind a factory on Boggabri Road.
They traced the utility back to a man who lived on the Oxley Highway near the Gunnedah Racecourse, where they discovered the home had been the subject of a break-in.
Between 3pm Saturday, December 5 and 9am, Thursday, December 10, investigators say someone used keys found inside the home to open two gun safes and remove five guns, along with approximately 1500 rounds of ammunition.

Police say jewellery, a stamp collection, a Polaris all-terrain performance vehicle and two motorcycles were also stolen.
Gunnedah police Inspector Michael Wurth said officers from Gunnedah and Narrabri police were now investigating the matter.
He said investigators were seeking dashcam and CCTV footage from December 5 to December 10.
"In particular in the areas of Conadilly and Bloomfield Streets ... for a late model Mitsubishi Triton tray-back utility with NSW registration of DBB04A," Inspector Wurth told ACM.
Inspector Wurth said if anyone was approached to purchase any of the stolen items or items "at a far-reduced rate to what they might be worth, to contact police straight away".
Anyone with information is urged to contact Gunnedah Police Station on 6742 9099 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
