The council's local traffic committee is supporting St Xavier's Primary School in its endeavours to hire a lollipop crossing supervisor and introduce a 40km/h speed limit for all hours of the day.

A spokesperson for the council said while it is a Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) matter, works manager Richard Baxter has contacted the school directly to offer assistance.

"Council would move to implement recommendations within our area of control following approval and funding being made available by these bodies," the spokesperson said.

It follows on from Gunnedah Public School being successful in an application for a crossing supervisor. Sue Smith started in the role in February.

In 2017, the council was first contacted by a parent from St Xavier's, who planned to lobby the RMS for a crossing supervisor for Bloomfield Street.

Schools have access to the application form that they are required to complete and return to Transport NSW who assess applications and provide funding for crossing supervisors.

The spokesperson said the council was "committed to ensuring the safety of children at all schools in the shire".

"We've recently run a safety campaign and council regulatory services staff conduct regular monitoring activities to enforce school zone compliance as do the NSW Police," they said.

"We would love for the community to get on board and are hoping that next time a parking officer attends, we see a significant drop in fines issued in school zones.

"We understand that mornings are always a rush, especially when dropping kids off to school, but it's imperative that the whole community work together to keep our school zones safe."

The technical-review committee meets quarterly to advise the council on traffic-related matters. It is an advisory body with no decision making powers.

It includes four members: a representative from the council, the police, the RMS and the local state MP or their nominee.
