The council has announced that the Currabubula community is welcome to take a maximum of 1000L of non-potable water once a week for a bit of extra help.

Every Wednesday from 3-5pm at the Currabubula hall, a council staff member is on hand to assist locals in taking their share, and ensuring that everyone taking the water is from Currabubula only.

The council's water services manager Rod Batterham said this was because Currabubula wasn't connected to town water, so with the drought ongoing it offered a "helping hand" to locals in the short term.

But Mr Batterham said if rainfall kept up, residents may not need to use the tank anymore.

"The demand will probably drop off because the rain has picked up and rain water tanks will have replenished," he said.

"We'll see if the demand is even there for the helping hand amount and it might get scaled back due to lack of demand. It demands on the rain we get.

"Things are turning around and perhaps the need for this is not nearly as high."

Rain in the LPSC has been at a high recently, with Werris Creek receiving over 200mm this year alone.

The town was hit by flash flooding in late January after 134mm fell in just one day. The town only had 280mm throughout the whole of 2019.

Mr Batterham said the Currabubula water tank had gone through a number of changes over the years, starting when the town was part of a previous council before amalgamations.

"They had a community bore available prior to amalgamations, but distribution was a bit ad hoc. It wasn't a good bore," he said.

"The opportunity to enhance that system to make it better distribution occurred during some funding and we've improved the system so distribution is a bit better."

Currabubula residents needing water can bring their own containers to the tank to fill up, and need to bring proof of address so they can take their share.
