The course, beginning next week, currently has 17 students enrolled, with even more on the waiting list.

But TAFE services manager Lea Sharpe said it was also up to employers for the course to thrive.

"We can't do it alone ... employment comes back to you," Ms Sharpe said.

"We want this to be a success, we want to keep building on for Gunnedah," TAFE head of skills Christine Maunder said.

Local industry members are encouraged to put their hand up to offer students in the course a place to get hands-on experience through the placement component of the course.

There is no cost for employers to put a student on for placement, and TAFE teachers offer support through the course component by checking in regularly.

Alongside representatives from TAFE, mayor Jamie Chaffey and Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson also spoke at the event.
