Superintendent Bob Noble has warned that there would be a strong police presence on the roads during the Christmas period.
"There will be a very high density of traffic policing going on, highway patrol will be out in force, along with general duties and other police, so people can expect a high level of patrols and scrutiny on the roads," he said.
"Drivers can expect if they're going to drink and drive, or drive with drugs in their system, they will be detected.
"If they're going to spend, or they're going to use their mobile phones while driving, there's every chance they're going to be pulled over and they're probably going to lose their licence.
"I would urge people when travelling whether a short distance or longer trip this Christmas period, plan your trip, think about your fatigue, don't drink alcohol and stay off the mobile phones and other devices when you're driving."
During the 2018-19 Christmas and New Year period, seven people died on NSW roads.
