Gunnedah Fire and Rescue's firefighters have described a deliberately lit blaze on the Namoi River as 'moronic behaviour'.

At 4.50pm on Wednesday, July 31, the station's tanker 314 was called to the fire on the banks of the river west of Gunnedah.
Gunnedah's firies were able to control the blaze, but were disappointed they had to deal with such behaviour from locals.

In a social media post written just an hour after the firies arrived at the scene, the crew said despite the cool weather, locals still should not light fires.
"Because it's winter and because it's not hot, does not mean we, as a community, can be complacent about grass/bush fires," the post said.
