According to a Transport for NSW spokesperson, the new rail overpass should ease congestion at the intersection when it is completed, so a roundabout wasn't needed.
"The intersection of Abbott and Conadilly streets is currently the junction of two state roads - the Oxley and Kamilaroi highways," the spokesperson said.
"However, this will change when the new overpass opens to traffic in 2021, as the Oxley Highway will shift down to the new roundabout at the intersection of Conadilly and Warrabungle streets and will relieve traffic pressures at the [Abbott Street and Conadilly Street] intersection."

Gunnedah mayor Jamie Chaffey said Gunnedah Shire Council would continue to look into streets that needed attention.
"We are always looking to improve the safety of the road users within our shire and we'll continually work with government departments to put forward our desires to improve traffic conditions where appropriate," Cr Chaffey said.
"We've been successful over the last three years in receiving funds from both the state and federal government ... and a further commitment of funds to see major roads and intersections improved and we will continue to work closely with the other tiers of government working on other identified areas within the shire."
