DROUGHT and declining breeding female numbers limited demand at the 30th NSW Shorthorn Spring Fling bull sale at Tamworth on Thursday resulting in 17 bulls selling to mainly New England and North West commercial breeders and Queensland.

Major buyer was Ross Pollock, Gunnedah, who purchased three Bungulla stud bulls for an average of $5667 including the $7000 sale-topper Bungulla Namoi, bred and offered by Peter and Lou Capel, Bungulla stud, Manilla.
Namoi is a son of Nagol Park TGL Hi-Road and weighed 936 kilograms at 25 months and carried an eye muscle area (EMA of 135 square centimetres.

Mr Pollock has cut his breeding herd in half and is now running 300 cows. He only buys red Shorthorn bulls which he joins to Charolais females with the resulting red heifer calves joined to Angus bulls for progeny he prefers to fatten in normal seasons.
The Stevenson brothers of Wallabadah secured three bulls between them with Jim and Alison Stevenson, Durham Vale, buying two bulls at $4000 each from Nero and KO studs,Condobolin.
They are currently running 50 commercial females producing vealers and yearlings, and depending on seasons, aim to clear progeny at 12 months-of-age to the prime market or feed lots as options.
David Stevenson, Balarang, paid $5000 for a Bungulla bull.
Department of Primary Industries, Glen Innes Research Station, paid $6000 for Nagol Park Zeus from Roger and Niaomi Evans, Nagol Park stud, Tamworth, and $5000 for Trojon Nitro Circus, offered by Trent Johnstone, Lyndhurst.
Three bulls sold to Queensland with NKP Pty Ltd, St George, buying two, paying $4000 for Leeds Gold Coin, offered by Gillian Leeds, Leeds stud, Jerilderie, and $4000 for Southern Cross New Farm, offered by Havana Johnstone and Lacey Stone, Purlewaugh.
The other buyer was Sam Streeter, Roma, Qld, who paid $4000 for Nero RR Newton from Nero stud.
The sale was conducted by Elders Tamworth with Brian Kennedy the auctioneer.
