AVID shooters from around the state converged on Gunnedah on Sunday for the final clay shooting competition for 2018.
Hosted by Gunnedah Sporting Clays, the 100 target competition attracted participants from as away as Armidale and Dubbo as each looked to top their respective category.
As well as fierce competition, the day also provided a friendly social atmosphere as members enjoyed shooting at Gunnedah’s state-of-the-art facility for the last time in 2018.
Gunnedah Sporting Clays president Scott Kelly said he was pleased with the turn out for the club’s final event of the year.
“It is really pleasing to have such a strong turn out,” Kelly said.
“We often have shooters coming to our monthly shoots from nearby clubs, such as Tamworth and Quirindi, but it is quite pleasing to see some that have come from further afield.
“There are some really good shooters here and we should hopefully see some very good performances.”
Trophies for six different categories were up for grabs with shooters of all ages battling it out for top spot.
“At the moment we are seeing a pretty strong contingent of junior participants,” Kelly said.
“I think that comes down to how man families get involved and enjoy the sport together.
“Clay shooting is really a growing sport as more and more people are moving away from things like trap shooting and giving this a go.”
Kelly said Gunnedah’s facilities would be the key to helping the sport grow within the region.
“We are very lucky to have a space of about 100 acres, which we own,” he said.
“It allows us to really have things the way we want them and provide an excellent venue for all our shooters.
“Hopefully with these fine facilities and the number of juniors getting involved we can continue to grow the sport going forward.”
Gunnedah will next host a shoot in January next year, with other clubs hosting their own shoots in the lead up to Christmas.
“If anyone out there is interested in giving it a go, I urge them to get in touch with us via the Gunnedah Sporting Clays Facebook page,” Kelly said.
“We are always welcoming of new members.”
