STUDENTS of Gunnedah’s St Xavier’s Primary School were riding high after a memorable performance at the last Horse Sports event of 2018.
The recent competition hosted by Tamowrth’s Calrossy Anglican School, saw 14 of the school’s students battle it out with other keen riders from across the region.
St Xavier’s excelled in the first feature event of the competition, with Jazmin Hobden and Caitlin Guy claiming first and second respectively in the nine-years showjumping competition.
The positive showjumping results continued for the St Xavier’s team, with Rylee Mitchell and Courtney Hodben coming first and fifth in the 11-years age group.
In the competition’s other feature event, the students entered into the new experience of team penning, with teams of three working together to pen cattle while riding.

St Xavier’s volunteer Karen Guy said the students “stepped up and got hands on” in the team penning event.
“This was the first time for most of our riders,” Guy said.
“But, they all stepped up and really enjoyed themselves.”
The school’s team performed admirably in their first outing taking home a second and third across two age groups.
The honours did not stop there as Caitlin Guy was named champion for the nine-years girls category, while Angus Tydd claimed the 10-years boys champion
Jed Simpson was close behind claiming the 10-years boys reserve champion, while Rylee Mitchell shone bright winning reserve champion in the 11-years girls category.
“Overall St Xavier’s came home with the highest point scoring school award,” Guy said.
“It was very exciting and a huge congratulations to an amazing effort for a talented team.”
