LIVING in the country has a lot of benefits over living in the city.
Fresh air, less traffic and the beauty of nature are some of the major attractions of living in the bush.
However, there are some things we can’t escape no matter where we live.
Unfortunately crime is one of those things.
In recent months Gunnedah has seen arguably more than its fair share of thefts and break and enters.
While these offences are committed by the smallest percentage of our community, it can leave a bitter taste in your mouth.
Still there is no need to throw the baby out with the bath water.
We have seen, particularly in recent times, the strength of our community when raising funds for worthy causes or supporting our many sporting teams during grand final action.
Our police are doing everything they can to keep our community safe and bring the criminals to justice.
But a little bit of help from us would go a long way.
The harsh reality is we no longer live in a world where we can leave our front door unlocked, or our keys in the ignition (in fact this one is actually illegal).
These common practices have been a recurring theme in many thefts around our community in recent months and are sadly being taken advantage of by opportunistic thieves.

As well as securing our property, looking out for our friends and neighbours will also go a long way to preventing crime.
Looking out for each other is something country people do best and it can make a major difference when preventing crime.
While these recent incidents leave an understandable sour taste in our mouths, we still live in a terrific community and we will continue to look out for each other.
So let’s continue to support our police, secure our property and look after each other because by doing that, there is no way of the criminals winning.
