Gunnedah hosts Royal Far West kids health bus

Kids will be able to have their eyes, teeth and nutrition tested by clinicians from Gunnedah, Tamworth and Sydney throughout the event at the Gunnedah Town Hall.

Royal Far West community programs manager John Reid said it was pleasing to see families take advantage of the service.

“This all started with a town hall meeting here in Gunnedah almost 12 months ago and has flowed from there,” Mr Reid said.

“Over the next three days we will see about 65 kids and give them a comprehensive health check, so it has been a very good response.”

Mr Reid said referrals were also a major part of the “community event”.

“In terms of finding solutions to any potential problems and referring them to local help it becomes a real community exercise,” he said.

“That’s why it is so important to not only have local families involved in the event but also local clinicians as well.

“Because if there are any issues it’s important to have that connection and this community event is a great way to start that.”

Event working group member Carolyn Leys said a lot of work had been done to bring the bus to Gunnedah.

“To me it is so pleasing to see this day come,” Ms Leys said.

“A lot of work has gone into it and I would especially like to highlight the generosity of Gunida Gunyah.

“Without them and their donation this event would not have been possible.”

Ms Leys said she was hopeful of hosting another health bus visit in the future.

“I think the response we have had shows there is a demand for it,” she said.

“So who knows, maybe we could have another visit in the future.”

Families interested in scheduling a visit before the bus leaves Gunnedah are encouraged to contact Royal Far West.

“We do have a pretty full schedule over the next three days and a waiting list,” Mr Reid said.

“However, there are a lot of ways we can still help, so if anyone has missed out I urge them to contact us and we will try to help in some way.”
