ROUNDING a corner on the flat, dry, dusty plains south of Gunnedah, the last thing an NVI reporter-photographer duo expected to find was an artist at work.

So, naturally, they pulled over to see what the story was.
Blue Mountains artist Rhett Brewer had set up his easel for some plein air painting.
“Perversely, I think the drought makes the colours more interesting,” Mr Brewer said.

He and several other artists, including former ABC newsreader Richard Morecroft, were in the area for about a week on a retreat at Little Kickerbell.
About 10 guests at any one time were out in the field doing painting, photography and even aerial imaging, Little Kickerbell co-owner Rowen Matthews said.
“There were artists scattered around ... here there and everywhere, plonked down doing stuff,” he said.
“We got some lovely work done – it was what I hoped for this place.”
He said the members of the group had met on an earlier retreat and tried to get together once a year.
Last year was in Tamworth, at Michelle and Phil Hungerford’s place.
“Most people produced half a dozen or more good works [last week], and they’ll end up in shows around the country, at different regional galleries and private galleries in Sydney,” Dr Matthews said.
“The group are going to have a show at Weswal Gallery [in Tamworth, in October] of work that we did last year ... We haven’t decided yet when to exhibit the works from last week.”
