FORMER Gunnedah residents Tony and Suzanne Campbell had an emotional journey home for ANZAC Day, accompanied by their son, Rear Admiral Mark Campbell AC CSC RANR, and their grand-daughter Gretel Carruthers.

The family took part in the ANZAC Day commemoration in St Joseph’s Parish, with a special Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Chapel, where they were all warmly welcomed by old friends and Parish Priest Fr John McHugh.
Their pilgrimage began at the Dawn Service where the decorated serviceman was acknowledged and welcomed by RSL President Peter Kannengiesser.
Suzanne Campbell (formerly Jansson) grew up in Gunnedah and Mark Campbell was born in the town.
He served in the helicopter arm of the Royal Australian Navy, including the first Gulf War.
Navy life has taken him around the world, including service in the Red Sea, the Atlantic and Pacific regions, along with three years in the Royal Navy.

After 38 years of service, Rear Admiral Campbell is now a reserve officer working for the navy.
He is based in Canberra, while his parents live in Toronto.
Suzanne Campbell said it was good to see everyone on ANZAC Day: “All have, and are, such an important part of my life.”
Earlier in the day the family had attended the Anzac Day service in Gunnedah which also five-year-old Liam Wise honour his great-grandfather’s legacy.
The young Gunnedah local honoured his great-great-grandfather on ANZAC Day, proudly displaying a framed collage of his medals and photos.
Liam’s great-grandfather Arthur Hogbin, survived the horrors of Gallipoli and returned home to work on the railways.
He married Constance Williamson and together they raised 14 children, surviving in a hut on Pensioner’s Hill during the dreadful Depression years. He died at the age of 89.
