As the sun set on Gunnedah, performers from community groups such as Gunnedah Shire Band, Gunnedah Conservatorium and Gunnedah RSL-Sub Branch put on a show of musical numbers, poetry readings and historical accounts.
Organised by the Anzac Working Group, the concert is the second consecutive concert at Pensioners Hill with each concert marking and celebrating 100 years of Anzac.
Anzac Working Group chair, councillor Owen Hasler told The Namoi Valley Independent the concert was a success.
“We had about 300 or 400 people there which is an excellent turn out,” Cr Hasler said.
“There was a terrific cross-section of the community at the concert, with people young and old enjoying the performances and soaking in the ambiance of being on the hill at sunset.”

Cr Hasler said the night’s performers were of an “exceptional quality”.
“The high school students silent performance was very powerful,” he said.
“Our shire band continued to live up to their impressive reputation with a fantastic performance and the students from the Gunnedah Conservatorium also delighted everyone in attendance.
“All told, everyone who performed, gave a reading or spoke at the concert did a fantastic job and the refreshments provided by the Rotary Club of Gunnedah West were also very well received.”
The Anzac Working Group will continue to celebrate the centenary of Anzac throughout the year.
“We have plenty more celebrations in line for this year,” Cr Hasler said.
“Throughout the year we will be doing a variety of things but the culmination of the Anzac centenary will be on November 10 in Gunnedah when we will lay a plaque at the cenotaph, and on November 11 when we will mark the conclusion of World War One at the Tambar Springs cenotaph.”
Cr Hasler said he was unsure if the Anzac tribute concert would become an annual tradition in Gunnedah.
“I would personally love to see the concert continue and become an annual event,” he said. “However, the duties of the Anzac Working Group conclude on November 11, so if it is to continue it will be through council either as a whole or through another working group.”
