The roo has been filmed frantically hopping along roadsides and across snow-covered fields in Oshawa, an hour east of Toronto, where temperatures are ranging from 2 degrees Celsius during the day to -5 degrees at night.
On December 4, officers from Durham Regional Police spotted the animal, and after being briefed on the safest way to capture it - grabbing its tail - successfully rescued the lost roo.
"She was cold, hungry but was unharmed otherwise," Staff Sgt. Chris Boileu told CBC News.
But the capture wasn't without incident with one officer struck in the face when they got too close initially, he said.
The officer is "fine" and police won't be investigating the incident, Sgt Boileu joked.
The marsupial was in transit to Quebec when its handlers dropped into Oshawa Zoo & Fun Farm for a stopover on November 30.
"As [the animal handlers] tried to unload it into our warm room where the kangaroo would be staying, it jumped over their head out of the trailer and it has now escaped and we are in the process of tracking it down," Oshawa Zoo supervisor Cameron Preyde told CTV News.
The search efforts have involved zoo staff, police and animal rescue group Team Chelsea, with a thermal imaging drone deployed to try to track the animal down.
Durham Regional Police were called to join the hunt on December 1 after a sighting in Oshawa.
"Members attended the scene but were not able to locate the animal and cleared," police said on X.
"If you see the kangaroo, do not approach."
A police spokesperson said the kangaroo was taken back to the Oshawa Zoo before it is expected to continue the journey to Quebec.
