The final 19.6 kilometre stretch of Rangari Road will be resealed across both Tamworth and Gunnedah, after the latter council was initially told to pay for the works.
The community has fought for the road to be resealed for more than a decade, and Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson said he was thrilled to deliver.
"Rangari Road, despite being an old goat track, is a key regional road transporting heavy and passenger vehicles to the mines, prime farmland and to homes," he said.
"The works on this road are being undertaken by Tamworth Regional Council (TRC) and Gunnedah Shire Council (GSC) and they tell me the project is on track for delivery next year, which is great news for the locals who have been patiently waiting for works to recommence."
The extra funds come on top an existing $10.4 million commitment, bringing the total spent on the road to more than $12 million.
GSC mayor Jamie Chaffey declined to comment on the matter while the council is in caretaker mode, but fought hard for the entire length of the road to be sealed.

In January it was reported a further $2.5 million would be required to finish the project, and GSC would be expected to foot the bill. The council felt it was not its responsibility.
Regional Transport Minister Paul Toole said the extra money represented the state government's commitment to ensuring safer roads in the bush.
"This work will provide major safety benefits as well as support a vital transport link between Manilla Road and the Kamilaroi Highway," Mr Toole said.
"Once completed, the upgraded Rangari Road will provide smoother and safer journeys for the families, freight operators and workers who use the road well into the future."
Construction is expected to start early 2022.
