The Red Devils led Inverell 15-nil at half-time before going on to take the points 20-7.

"It was really a game of two halves," Red Devils coach Dan Martin said.

The first half they were "quite dominant" and probably should have put on a few more points, but "just weren't patient" enough.

The second half was a completely different story.

Martin reckoned they probably would have had only 30 per cent of the ball.

But their defence was up to the task, conceding just the one try.

The defensive effort was for Martin the most encouraging part of the performance.

They were defending for long periods in that second half, but the Highlanders weren't able to really get a roll-on.

And the few times they did make some inroads they scrambled well.

The set piece, which is an area they have targetted to be a strength for them, was also good.

Will Burke was strong on debut at No.8, the former St Alberts captain picking up the three points and the players' player.

Second rower Will Bright also played well, Martin said. The Englishman was also playing his first game for the club.

Zac Newcombe, James Perrett, George Toalepai and Steven Leuta ensured they picked up the maximum points.

Thomas Barnwell scored the lone try for the Highlanders, who were Martin said a "far better side" than they were two years ago.

"Their hooker was very good and Tom Bucknell played well," he said.

The latter was part of Walcha's grand final side two years ago, but has returned home to Inverell.

The Red Devils seconds also picked up the points 19-12, but the women's 7s side were beaten in both of their games.

The first game was tight with the Highlanders edging out the Red Devils 21-15 but the second was one-way traffic, the Inverell side racking up the win 54-nil.
