Former Gunnedah Junior Cricket Association president Andrew Johns said the slab of concrete for the memorial was laid on Monday, with the bench to hopefully be installed over the weekend.
Heath's family have given a lot to junior sport, in particular cricket and rugby league, and Mr Johns said the memorial would be a fitting tribute.
"I see Heath's mum Katrina King at cricket every week and they're quite chuffed I guess, Heath was a special little kid, it sounds cliche but he touched the heart of everyone he knew he was just such an optimistic little fella," he continued.
The memorial is partly funded by the Gunnedah junior and senior cricket and Gunnedah junior and senior rugby league associations.
"We thought it was a good way to make sure that he's always remembered in Gunnedah which I'm sure he would have been anyway," Mr Johns said.
"I know his old man goes and has a couple of beers when he watches the rugby league up there so he'll be able to perch up there next to the bar and watch the cricket from his seat."
