With many locals sticking around and more visitors than usual, as displayed by a record holiday season at nearby attraction Lake Keepit, Gunnedah businesses were able to capitalise.
While the official figures are still being put together, GDCCI president Juliana McArthur said their shop local program was a huge success.
Those who spent more than $20 in a single purchase and completed an entry form - at participating businesses - entered a competition to receive weekly prizes or even a car. The extra incentive made a noticeable difference according to Ms McArthur.
"We definitely saw an increase in people visiting Gunnedah to shop for Christmas," she said.
"I think due to COVID we've sort of rediscovered the importance of looking after one another in our community and rediscovering how good Australia is as a place to holiday."
While some business owners took a well-deserved break from Christmas Eve into the New Year, many kept their doors open for the majority of that time and were able make the most of the influx in customers.
Ms McArthur said the businesses that shut had every right to, especially after such a tough year.
"We have had such a busy build up to Christmas so I'm not going to knock them for that," she said.
"It's just part of the general community that people take time off over Christmas."
