Workers are set to be "on the ground" to start the sealing of one section of Rangari Road in June or July 2021.

Gunnedah Shire Council mayor Jamie Chaffey says council's section of the road will have graders and equipment there ready to go.

He said the engineering and design work had already begun in conjunction with Tamworth Regional Council.

In terms of funding, Cr Chaffey said he was pleased to see the announcement of an extra $1.4 million from the state government.

NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro announced the money on Tuesday, saying it was now Gunnedah council's turn to chip in some of the remaining funds.

Cr Chaffey has since said in response the council would be "constructing the road project to the value currently allocated by the state government", and would "continue to work with our local member and the state government to find funding sources to complete the total project".

"It's great news that the extra $1.4 million has come forward for the project by the state government and we'll continue to work with the state government to deliver great projects for the shire," he told ACM.

The $1.4 million in funds brings the committed state government amount to $10.4 million. This leaves a $2.5 million shortfall, which Mr Barilaro says local councils need to pitch in for.

Tamworth Regional Council has already committed its share of the money, according to the Deputy Premier.
