Only final finishing touches still need to be done on the $8.2 million upgrade, like line-marking and guide post installation.
Mullaley resident Lizzy Bell said she hadn't taken the drive from Mullaley to Boggabri yet, but she'd heard from others that it was "absolutely wonderful".
"It's made it so much safer and we're just extremely pleased," she said.

Mrs Bell and her family have been living on the road for the last 13 years, and are very excited to see it finished.
Another regular user is Mullaley Bus Service owner Russell Keam, who drives the Mullaley Public School children on the bus route every day.
He's "very impressed" with the work Gunnedah Shire Council staff has put in to see the road fixed, and said they were "very speedy and very fast at getting the job done".
"It was a very difficult job to drive on the gravel road the way it was. It was probably the worst road I've driven on and I've been all over Australia," Mr Keam said.
"It's a pleasure to drive it now and I'm sure all of the residents out there would agree."
The bus driver has been campaigning for the road to be sealed for years, constantly writing letters to the state and federal government to see it done.
He thanked Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson, Parkes MP Mark Coulton and Gunnedah mayor Jamie Chaffey.
"They just didn't leave any stone unturned, they really put effort into it and got the money and once the money was approved it was right," Mr Keam told the NVI.
Cr Chaffey said the process was sped up this year for the road to be ready in time for the winter harvest.
"It was all about harvest. We did the primary seal and put extra crews on ready to have that done for harvest ... and [we'll be] finishing the final works once the heavy traffic is complete," he said.
Cr Chaffey said an official opening might occur in the near future.
