GoFundMe community fundraiser launched for Werris Creek golf club after infrastructure destroyed by January flood, followed by tough year

A storm in January severely damaged five bridges and dumped tonnes of debris across the fairways.

Players need to cross the creek several times when teeing off at Werris Creek's course, so bridges are essential to getting back to normal business.

Club president Warrick Moore said it's been a tough run for the course recently, which is usually a drawcard for the small town.

"On top of the flooding, we've gone quiet with COVID, so cash flow has dropped off and the majority of our golfers are elderly and aren't playing golf, and having no bridges has just made it worse as well," he said.

A group of golf club volunteers have now set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for repairs.

Mr Moore said he'd been shocked by the positive community response.

"It has been very humbling to think people are putting their hands in their pockets and helping us out, and I just did not think this would happen," he said.

Mr Moore said volunteers had put in the hard yards to get players back on the course, but more money would help with rebuilding bridges and making them wider and sturdier.

More than $2500 had been raised in just four days.

Mr Moore joked a "generous" donor might even get a bridge named after them.

The course can still be used in sunny weather and the clubhouse is open for raffles and meals.
