Gunnedah Show Society president Rob Witts said the tank needed to be installed so rain water run-off from the showground's stables was dealt with.
Mr Witts said the society decided the best option would be to conserve the water for future use during events at the facility.
"It was either take the rain water to View Street storm water drain or put a tank in," he said.
"The water will be an asset. We're hoping we can utilise it at showtime for the roads and those sorts of things."

The overflow from the tank will then go to the View Street drain.
Mr Witts said the tank now fulfilled a development application requirement for the stables, and that it was made possible by a loan from the organisers of the Gunnedah Country Music Muster.
"Because the show society is strapped for cash, we spoke to the coordinator of the country music muster and they've lent the money for the tank so we could purchase it and then obviously when the society will be flushed with cash again we'll reimburse the country music muster," he said.
The show society president attributed the idea for the tank to George Avard, as he had "put all the work in to getting it in place".
