BoM's climate operations manager Dr Andrew Watkins said their wet outlook was driven by modelling indicating a La Nina could develop in the spring.
"We're starting to see that in the Pacific, with a La Nina beginning to take shape, and we are also seeing some changes in the Indian Ocean, which may also boost the chance of rain during spring," he said.
La Nina and warmer eastern Indian Ocean temperatures "typically increase the likelihood of above average rainfall across much of Australia during spring," the bureau says.
There's only an equal likelihood of above average temperatures for the next three months, with the median temperature set to be about 24 degrees.
Gunnedah received 40.6mm rain overall in August, with the highest temperature hitting 25 degrees on August 31.
The rainfall boosted the region's dam levels, too, with Keepit Dam sitting at 24.6 per cent as at Wednesday morning.
