A fine issued to a Gunnedah man has sparked a warning to waste operators from the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA).

The EPA is warning waste operators that they must have the right waste-tracking process in place after it fined the man $750 for an alleged offence relating to the transport and disposal of asbestos waste.
On November 28 last year the man allegedly transported 2680kg of bonded asbestos waste to Gunnedah Landfill that was not recorded in Waste Locate, the waste compliance tracking system.
Anyone transporting and disposing of commercial quantities of waste in NSW must use the tracking system and have a valid consignment number.

The EPA had previously provided education materials and assistance on the use of the Waste Locate app to the operator, but they continued to allegedly fail to comply with the regulation and use the tracking system, which has resulted in a $750 fine.
EPA manager regional operations Lindsay Fulloon said it was important all waste, and especially asbestos waste, was managed and disposed of legally.
"To protect the community and the environment waste must end up at a licensed landfill and be tracked all the way from loading to disposal to ensure it is dealt with safely and legally," Mr Fulloon said.
