Carroll sportsground upgrade great news for small town residents

The grounds are located on the corner of David Street and the Oxley Highway, and now has a brand new white fence.

Carroll Progress Association members were successful in gaining $150,000 in funding through the federal government's Drought Communities Program for the project.

Gunnedah mayor Jamie Chaffey announced the good news alongside deputy mayor Rob Hooke, group president Robyn Hammat and group member Paula Pratten on Tuesday morning.

Ms Pratten said locals were "really excited to be given this opportunity", and are looking forward to hosting events in the future.

"It's not just a sporting ground, it's a community ground, so we'll be able to use it for lots of different things," she said.

"Being so close to the school, they'll be able to use it as well as the preschool.

"It's going to be a huge asset to the community."

Cr Chaffey said it was something for the whole shire to enjoy.

"It's great to see work's already begun at Carroll," he said on Tuesday.

Ms Pratten said the funding also covered many other things.

"All the gum trees surrounding the oval have been pruned and maintained ... and the old [cricket] pitch has been removed and we're going to be putting in a new pitch, as well as planting some couch in the spring," she said.

"We'll have a lovely, irrigated green space in Carroll for the community."

The sportsground is set to be ready for use by the end of this year.

It's part of 14 other Gunnedah projects funded through the Drought Communities Program.
