It's not yet known whether the two incidents are linked, but police said investigations are continuing.
Firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW in Gunnedah were called to the scene of the Herbert Street blaze at about 6pm on Sunday, before being called back out to the Little Conadilly Street home at 2am.
Crews used breathing apparatus to take control of the Herbert Street fire, but this wasn't needed at the second property as the house was "destroyed" by the fire.
