Athletes from the Cycling and Mountain Biking squad have been gathering over the past two weeks to be the first program from NIAS back at full squad trainings.
Throughout the pandemic, head coach Michael Crummy has been keeping the athletes busy with a range of activities including Sunday skills sessions for the riders to practise individually.
Some of these sessions have focused on body movements while riding, ratcheting the pedals, descending skills, and cornering techniques.
Initially, upon returning to training, a handful of cycling and mountain biking athletes gathered for a selected squad training session in the middle of June with their head coach.
The following week on June 20 was the first full squad training session the team has had since COVID-19 restrictions became enforced some months ago.
The athletes travelled to Armidale where the session was held at the immaculate facilities available through our partners SportUNE.
NIAS gymnasts from the Gunnedah Services and Bowling Club Lonestar program are also back in training.
Whilst they are yet to be back into the full swing of training, they have returned to some normality with the reopening of their gymnasium.
Athletes, Amber Downes, Maisie Wilde, Paige Seaton and Josie Douglas are all members of the Tamworth Gymnastics Club and have recommenced training with some basic skills, building strength and flexibility after training outside of the gymnasium over the last three months.
As sporting restrictions at a community level ease at the beginning of July, Northern Inland Academy of Sport coaches from squads such as basketball, netball, tennis, AFL, athletics, and golf will be able to follow our Cycling and Lonestar programs with the recommencement of squad training sessions.
Face-to-face training sessions for most of these squads will re-launch over the coming weeks as we move further into winter.
