Barber Street Practice's Dr Abdul Anwari will be finishing up at the practice on Friday after seven years of living in Gunnedah. He is planning on working at a practice in Sydney's Castle Hill area.
Dr Anwari loves Gunnedah and its people, and said it was only the "personal family" reasons that were driving him back to Sydney.
"I came as a GP and the plan was to stay for six months and I stayed for seven years," Dr Anwari said.
"It's a very friendly town with nice people."

Dr Anwari said his favourite part about working in Gunnedah was the people.
"It's a small town [so] everyone knows every other person and all your patients know you and you feel confident with them, so that's the best thing," he said.
The doctor sympathised with residents that there were minimal GPs in town, listing the reasons as "lack of skills in emergency work" and the income.
"There is not much incentive coming to a rural area because if a doctor is getting the same kind of income in Sydney they will not prefer to come to a rural area," he said.
But, he said returning to the shire was one of his future plans.
"I might come back, but we'll see how we go. If my family settle down there and my son goes to high school he'll probably be going to uni ... so I might come back," he said.
