GUNNEDAH'S Blake Small has completed a stellar debut season of baseball, taking out the Tamworth Baseball Association's rookie of the year award.

Playing for the Gunnedah Giants, Small was one of the side's most consistent players both with the bat, and while fielding at third base.
"I found the season really enjoyable overall and winning this award is something I never thought would happen," Small said.
"My main motivation for playing was to try something a bit different.
"I had grown a bit tired of soccer and I was also hoping it would improve my cricket game as well."

Small said his positive experience with the Giants had left him feeling keen to play again next season.
"It's a really good group of guys and I had a lot of fun playing and improving throughout the season," he said.
"It's a sport I never thought I'd play, I'm really glad I have and I'm pretty keen to play again next season."
Small said he would now turn his attention towards the upcoming cricket season with Court House.
"I'm not too sure when we will get back into training, but I'm sure it can't be too far away," he said.
"Baseball is very different from cricket but I reckon it really helped my hand-eye co-ordination.
"Hopefully, I can take a few of things I have learned at bring them into cricket."
