CCTV footage showed seven 20L chemical drums falling from a ute before 10am at the roundabout on Conadilly and Elgin streets. Two drums spilt unknown chemicals on the roadway and in the gutter up to 30 metres down Elgin Street.
The drums were collected by the driver and a passenger, who then fled the scene.

Gunnedah Fire and Rescue were called to the scene, before Tamworth Fire and Rescue were called to provide specialist advice to the Gunnedah crew.
Sand was used to absorb the chemical, and crews in breathing apparatus and splash suits shovelled the sand and chemical into HAZMAT bins. These bins were then taken to a secure location for further testing.
Both fire and rescue crews thanked the support of the police, ambulance crews, and Gunnedah Shire Council throughout the day.
Gunnedah Fire and Rescue were disappointed that some pedestrians stepped under the barrier tape and walked near the unknown chemical, saying the tape "is there for a reason and for your safety".
