Werris Creek co-coach Ron Dellar said the Magpies had hoped to "finish the first round with 10 points".
"Our goal was 10, we've got 12," Dellar said after Saturday's hard-earned win at Boggabri.
He was more than happy with his side's display even though they may have wasted a few good opportunities.
"It was a very physical game," he said.
"They took it to us. They dominated early then we fought back and got on top."
While his side trailed the Roos they were "never more than four points behind at any stage".
"To their (Boggabri) credit they never stopped," Dellar said.
