As well as fiction books for recreation, the library has plenty of titles available for school holiday projects or special interests such as dinosaurs, oceans, animals, plants, the solar system, different cultures, and so on. Just ask the library staff for help in finding these special books, which are available for all levels of reading.
For children needing reading assistance, we have the very popular free Bookends Literacy Assist program, which runs every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 3pm to 5pm, and on Fridays from 3pm until 4.20pm.
The children read out loud to volunteer seniors who give help and encouragement. Bookings are essential for this program, so if you wish your child to take part and get some vital reading practise, please ring the library on 6740 2190 to book in your child.
The library runs Toddler Time from 10.30am to 11am each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning for children aged from zero to four years. Several stories are read, and there's also a simple handicraft for the children to complete.
Older children from eight to 12 years can attend Junior Brain Games on Wednesday afternoons from 3.30pm to 4.30pm. There's story reading and comprehensive, and brain games such as join the dots, find the objects, spot the difference, word and memory games, with drawing and also colouring-in sometimes included in the program. There's a limit of 10 children in this program, which is free, so please ring on 6740 1290 to book a place.
Children who attend any of our programs are eligible to join either the 1000 Books Before School, or the 1000 Books After School program, a literacy initiative that encourages children to read and develop a lifelong love of books and learning. Milestone certificates are presented by the mayor throughout the year.
See you soon at the library.
