He said the award was "very unexpected" and many people were "very deserving of the award".
"While it's very humbling, it would be great if everyone got one," he said.
Mr Baum was chosen for his "deep commitment and passion" to improve outcomes of Aboriginal students at Gunnedah South where he has "ardently initiated, led and supported Aboriginal education programs, making significant contributions to student achievements, culture and identity".
The educator was noted for his "strong connections" with local Aboriginal groups and active involvement in the Gunnedah branch of AECG.
It's about caring for all the students that come through our doors every day and knowing all of them.

Mr Baum said his approach was "always for all students".
"It's about improving learning outcomes for all students in our school and in our area," he said.
"It's about caring for all the students that come through our doors every day and knowing all of them, and I think it's something public education does really well."
The principal said the recent recognition of his actions wouldn't change the way he approached his role.
"I'm still getting up and I'm still going to keep doing my job the exact same way I do now," he said.
"You just do your job and keep supporting and encouraging people to do their jobs effectively."
Mr Baum donated his prize money to the school's student representative council and a Year 6 class.
