Co-organiser Sharon Norman said the number of entries this year was "exceptional".
"We haven't had this many entries for a few years; there's usually only about 300-350," Mrs Norman said.
The competing classes will include working dog, non-sporting, utility and toy, with breeds on show to include everything from Siberian huskies to schipperkes.
Mrs Norman said there was a lot to be gained from such large shows.
"All exhibitors really put into the town, they go shopping and eat the food," she said.
"It's a big thing for Gunnedah."
The memory of the late Lyn Crow will be commemorated through the Saturday afternoon show.
On Saturday night, exhibitors will dress up in hippy clothing and embrace the theme of flower power to remember one of their own. Mrs Crow was the treasurer of the New England Ladies Kennel Club.
"Lyn was very well respected in showing for almost 40 years - she was a pekingese breeder and shower," Mrs Norman said.
"She was a very funny person, you really had to know her to appreciate her."
