More about Lucy...
Lucy was born two months premature and stayed in intensive care for the first six weeks of her life.
At one year, Lucy was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Over the past seven years, Lucy has seen countless specialists and regularly attends specialist medical appointments in Newcastle.
It is likely that Lucy has a severe intellectual disability however, this cannot be confirmed as she is non-verbal and has poor motor control limiting her communication options. Lucy cannot walk and relies heavily on her wheelchair.
But Lucy has always been a fighter. Lucy gets about her world in a wheelchair but also moves with a “froggy jump” around her house on all fours.
Although she cannot speak, Lucy certainly makes her presence known. She greets familiar people with a smile and a friendly squeal.
Lucy absolutely loves the water! She also loves strawberries, which she can spot from across the room. Lucy loves light and colour and all sorts of interesting textures.
Despite the difficulties that Lucy faces, Lucy loves attending the GS Kidd Memorial School in Gunnedah and trying new experiences.
More about Amy…
Amy recently moved to Gunnedah to allow Lucy to attend school and be closer to Lucy's grandparents, all of whom reside in the Coonabarabran district.
Amy's family say she is a kind and selfless person who has always put others before herself. She has received a Young Citizen of the Year award for her academic achievements and commitment to the Mendooran community, she has been a volunteer English teacher in Vanuatu, she has completed a double degree in law and politics and has been admitted as a lawyer.
Amy, who is Lucy's sole carer, is completing her PhD. Throughout the last seven years, Amy has worked tirelessly to support her daughter, Lucy, in every way possible.
