The new Gunnedah Memorial Swimming Pool was officially opened today, more than 60 years after the original pool's first use.

Gunnedah mayor Jamie Chaffey said the pool and the wider complex was an essential community asset, which needed to be preserved.
"[This is] the result of a years worth of planning and designing that began back in 2014, and 14 months of construction ... which will see us well into the future for ... a new generation of Gunnedah residents and visitors," Cr Chaffey said.
"There are people in town that learnt to swim in the old facilities as kids, and now have grandchildren who will learn to swim here as well."

The original pool was used for the first time in November 1955 after the community banded together to build it.
The heated pool was built in 1972, and its enclosure was built in 1996.
Fast-forward more than 20 years and the complex now includes a brand new, FINA compliant eight lane, 50-metre swimming pool, a kids wet and dry playground area, and a new pavilion and amenities.
