Indigenous and non-Indigenous teams will vie for the Wayne Griffiths Cup and the Donna Smith-Hickey Cup from 9.30am at the Gunnedah Rugby Club.
Emma Costello and Hayden Smith will captain the male and female Indigenous sides, and Lauren McCoy and Harley Cheetham will captain the non-Indigenous sides.
The touch football competition was launched at Aussiefest last year as the result of a conversation between John Hickey and Gamilaroi man Wayne Griffiths.
“The main focus for us is the Indigenous cups,” Mr Hickey said.
“It’s based around fun and respect for each other’s culture.”
Aussiefest will kick off with the land raft and craft race at 8.30am in place of the usual river event. Locals are encouraged to build a craft they can step into and race down the field. Registrations will be taken from 7.30am.
The day’s activities will also include a pet parade and dog sprints at 10.30am. The sprints include a title for working dogs, pig dogs and “the town mutt”, with registrations open at 10am.
The Dash for Cash and backyard cricket start at 11am, and Gunnedah’s Strongest Man and Woman competition will take place at 1pm.
