Mrs Wills has been nominated for Citizen of the Year and the Marie Maunder Community Service award because she has spearheaded Quirindi CWA’s drought relief appeal. The branch has been distributing funds to drought-affected farmers throughout 2018.
Liverpool Plains shire mayor Andrew Hope said organisations like the CWA were part of the reason Australia Day was celebrated.

“The spirit of what we celebrate, being great, is exemplified by the generosity displayed by so many during 2018, supporting us as we faced catastrophic drought conditions,” councillor Hope said.
“The awards ceremony is the official bit of the shire’s celebrating what is great.”
The awards ceremony will be held at The Royal Theatre, on Saturday, January 26, at 10.30am. Other award categories include Young Citizen of the Year, Local Legend, Junior Sportsperson of the Year, and Emergency Services Community Award.
Josephine Peter will be a special guest at the awards after being named this year’s Australia Day ambassador.
Cr Hope said Ms Peter had been involved with many community organisations over the years, starting at the age of seven when she knitted a pair of socks for Australia’s troops during World War II.
“She’s listened to people’s problems as a telephone counsellor, supported Rotary, the VIEW Club, Probus, the Smith Family, and the women’s flying doctors,” he said.
“I look forward to welcoming her to Liverpool Plains shire and her sharing part of her story with us on Australia Day.”
Prior to Australia Day, the CWA will hold a concert at the Quirindi RSL Club on Thursday, January 24, from 10.30am.

Cr Hope said there would be a number of celebrations on Australia Day.
There will be free entry at the Werris Creek and Quirindi aquatic centres will be open from 10am-7pm. There will be an inflatable obstacle feature at the Quirindi centre for the young and the young-at-heart from 1pm-3pm. Cost is $5 per person for unlimited rides.
In Werris Creek, celebrations at Werris Creek start at David Taylor Oval at 6.30pm.
“It's always a great evening with a BBQ dinner, followed by fun games, and fantastic fireworks to finish the night, weather permitting,” Cr Hope said.
