The gates of the complex will be throw open to the public on Saturday from 11am, with free entry.
Kamilaroi man James Hogbin will perform the Welcome to Country and an Indigenous dance group will perform. Gunnedah shire mayor Jamie Chaffey will give the opening speech.
“I am very honoured and privileged to have the once in a lifetime opportunity to welcome Gunnedah shire residents to their upgraded memorial pool complex,” Cr Chaffey said.
“The project has been one of the largest completed in Gunnedah shire’s history, and will service the community as a state-of-the art facility for many years.”
Ruth Pope, Savannah Lyons, Tim Walsh, Lauren Robertson, Angus Hobson, Marie Hobson, John Hickey, and Barbara Williams will be the first locals to swim in the new 50-metre outdoor pool after being chosen from 50 nominations. They will receive an item of memorabilia as a keepsake.
After the first lap, there will be several races including under 11’s, under 14’s, and an open race organised by Swimming Gunnedah. When the races are over around 12.15pm, the public will be invited to jump in.
Other activities include a free jumping castle, face painting and giveaways. The Kinfolk Poolside Kiosk will be serving hot and cold food all day.
Entry is free on both Saturday and Sunday. The pool will open on Sunday from 9am-8pm. The indoor 25-metre heated pool will be closed from 10am both days.
