Rayne Charles Shipman and Shane Mathews charged after police chase in Gunnedah, Curlewis

Rayne Charles Shipman and Shane Mathews are facing 12 charges between them including pursuit and stealing after allegedly leading officers on a chase in and around Gunnedah and down to Curlewis.

Shipman, 19, and 20-year-old Mathews lodged applications for release in Tamworth Local Court which was granted by magistrate Julie Soars, after they spent the night in custody following their arrest near Curlewis.

The pair allegedly stole items from a Nissan Pathfinder parked in the driveway of Wattle Street in the early hours of November 7, before allegedly entering a second car in the same street and stealing goods.

From there, the pair then allegedly stole items from a detached garage in Banksia Place before breaking into cars parked in Kurrajong Road and Tallowwood Drive but fled empty handed after rummaging through the contents.

Police allege the crime spree started about 2am before the pair stole a Ford Falcon from a Tallowwood Drive property.

The owner woke and alerted police who started patrols for the stolen vehicle.

The pair allegedly drove around the Gunnedah township before the Falcon was spotted in Bridge Street about 6.30am.

Police allege Shipman was behind the wheel when officers signalled for the car to stop.

Shipman then allegedly took off, reaching speeds estimated to be 100km per hour in a 50 zone before police terminated the pursuit for safety concerns.

Members of the public saw the Falcon and directed officers to its location before they activated their lights and sirens.

The Falcon sped off again near the intersection of Stock Road and Porcupine Lane, and police said offices again terminated the chase for safety concerns due to the manner of driving.

Extra back-up was called in and three other police cars set about looking for the car which headed to Curlewis.

It was spotted in the township but officers lost of the vehicle.

The Falcon eventually ran out of fuel, and two men ran from the vehicle into bushland off Pike Street, near Preston Street.

Officers gave chase and eventually arrested the pair.

Matthews was charged with five offences including stealing, being carried in a stolen conveyance and break and enter, while Shipman is facing seven similar offences including police pursuit.

The pair were granted bail to front court again at a later date.
