At October’s council meeting, councillors voted to continue developing the council’s strong partnership with the Northern Inland Academy of Sport (NIAS) by signing on as an associate member for 2019.
The partnership will see the council contribute $2,200 to support NIAS athletes throughout the upcoming year and will see the academy’s representative rugby teams based in Gunnedah throughout the year.
The council’s director of planning and environmental services Andrew Johns said the shire’s “strong rugby culture” made it an ideal place for the team to be based.
“Over the past 5-years over 85 NIAS athletes have come from the Gunnedah region and they look forward to welcoming many more over the coming years,” Mr Johns said.
“As part of NIAS’ commitment to the region, they will again be aligning each of their 12 sports with a particular town, with that squad acquiring the responsibility of giving back to the region and in particular their selected town.
“Given the strong rugby culture that exists within the Gunnedah community it makes sense that the NIAS rugby squad and Gunnedah Shire Council form a strong relationship that will see great growth into the future.”
