The lake was spectacular with a light south-westerly blowing with strange whirlwinds unpredictably surprising the boat crews at Lake Keepit on Sunday.

Two races were held with five starters for the morning race and nine in the afternoon.
Tamworth’s Robert Kelly won the start in his laser dingy and sailed an excellent race but could not catch Quirindi’s Keith Garrett in his laser dinghy “Wink”. There was an excellent breeze for the small fleet as they completed a triangular course and line honours went to Michael Juchau sailing a Marie catamaran.
Lachlan Overton, 11, showed he would be a sailor to be reckoned with in the future as he completed his first race in the club’s O’Pen Bic training boat. He gained third placing on corrected time. Garrett crossed the finish line with the second fastest time and gained first place on corrected time.
Heat three of the Spring Cup was the afternoon race on the day with nine boats lining up for the start. In a very light breeze Tim Corben floated over the start line in the lead closely followed by Garrett, Kelly and Kevin Overton. The light shifty breeze was difficult to pick sailing upwind but the leading group of boats after the first lap of the triangular course were Manilla’s Dave Aylwin (Marie Cat), Keith Garrett (laser), Kevin Overton (laser) and Tim Corben (laser).
The race settled into a tussle within two groups of sailing boats. The fastest group, the catamarans, and the second, mono-hull laser dinghies.
Among the catamarans Dave Aylwin led, with Doug Whiteman sailing a Nacra 5 challenging him throughout the remaining laps of the course. Eventually Aylwin took line honours from Whiteman and a fast finishing Juchau in his marie cat.
The monohulls in the fleet were not far behind with Stan White and Bob Tallon in “Pzazz” crossing ten seconds ahead of Keith Garrett with a very wet Tim Corben (from multiple capsizes) finishing next.
