This week, Gunnedah’s sister city is digging deep, with more than 60 organisations involved including churches, community groups, sporting groups and businesses.
Jacky Barker, founder of In the Cove, a popular website and Facebook page, said she and her volunteers had been busy delivering collection boxes, which were quickly filling up.
“I’ve spent the last two weeks, with some great helpers, running around dropping off collection boxes and the local printer printed everything free for me,” Ms Barker said.
“Some of the collection boxes I understand are already full.”
Ms Barker said a number of sporting groups are using their presentation days to help out.
“Lane Cove Football raised $793 at their presentation day,” she said.
Other fundraising activities this week include Dress like a Farmer days and Rock on for Rain with former The Voice contestant Tim Conlan.
Ms Barker is also having tea towels printed, with the words ‘London Paris New York Milan Gunnedah’.
“We’ll be selling in Lane Cove and the money will go to Gold for Gunnedah and then we’ll send them to the farmers,” she said.
“A nice tea towel is a nice thing and it cheers people up.”
One of Ms Barker’s helpers is former Gunnedah woman and teacher Bronwyn Zbik who has been proactive in her church, her children’s daycare centre and her school Lane Cove West Public School.
“[On Monday], my school did their Father’s Day breakfast and every year they choose a charity. This year, they did Gold for Gunnedah,” Mrs Zbik said.
Mrs Zbik said Lane Cove was “quite a generous community”.
“This is a cause people want to get behind because of the Gunnedah connection,” she said.
“I’ve been so impressed to know that there are at least 60 different community group that are getting behind the cause. The spirit of Lane Cove, that people aren’t forgetting their country cousins – I’m proud of Lane Cove for doing that.”
After the funds are tallied next week, they will be handed through Lane Cove’s Rotary club to Gunnedah’s Rotary clubs, which will distribute vouchers throughout the community.
Mrs Zbik and Ms Barker are also hopeful that Lane Cove Council’s proposal of a $5000 donation for Gunnedah will clear public consultation this month.
