Now in its 85th year, the race meet on July 15 will be themed the French Revolution (1788-1799) in recognition of Bastille Day, which is celebrated on July 14.
The annual event will once again be held at Wean race track, with gates to open at 9.30am and the first race at 12pm.
Race club president Les Alker said the committee was looking forward to the popular day out.
“We know it’s a very difficult year for people but we’re expecting a big year in spite of that,” he said.
The club recently formed a partnership with Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, which will see buses run from Tamworth, Narrabri, Armidale and Coonabarabran. At $15 a ticket, the funds will go towards the helicopter service.
“The partnership will not affect our local charity project – we’re still supporting all our local charities including Gunnedah Shire Band,” Mr Alker said.
Funds from this year’s race meet will go to Boggabri Pony Club and the Boggabri and Community Progress Association.
Mr Alker said the committee was excited about the costume theme and what race-goers will turn out in, with prizes for best female, best male, best couple, best revolution costumes and many more. There will be $300 for the best historical handmade costume. For those not in costume, the colour code is red, blue and white.
“The historical theme has proved very popular in the past,” Mr Alker said.
“Some of the costumes have been superb.”
This year, the overall racing prize money has been raised to $20,000.
Gate entry for adults is $15, children aged 12-16 are $12, children under 12 are free, and pensioners are $8.
