A WOMAN will be issued a notice to front court accused of trying to smuggle contraband into the Tamworth Correctional Centre.

The 39-year-old woman attended the prison on Sunday afternoon during the centre’s weekend visiting hours when police allege she attempted to take in a suspicious item between 1 and 1.30pm.
She was stopped by prison officers and when questioned about carrying a prohibited article, she allegedly produced a quantity of tobacco.
Police were called and corrective officials seized the contraband.

Police said the woman will be issued a field court attendance notice to front court for the offence of introducing an item prohibited in a correctional facility. She is expected to appear in Tamworth Local Court in July.
If found guilty of the offence, the woman faces a maximum of two years imprisonment or a $2200 fine.
Tobacco and smoking as well as cigarette-related goods like lighters, matches and e-cigarettes were banned in all NSW prison in 2015.
