Ryan went down on a points decision in the 10-round fight for the World Boxing Association Oceania Super Welterweight Title at The Melbourne Pavilion and said there was one area where he went wrong.
“It was close. We probably weren’t quite busy enough throughout stages of the fight,” Ryan said.
“I hurt him throughout the fight but didn't capitalise on those moments.”
Ryan called the loss a “learning curve” and said he wasn’t far off the mark.
“He [Zerafa] was tough. He’s only had two losses to two world champions and one was a world title fight,” Ryan said.
“Full respect to Michael and his team. He’s very experienced and had a lot of fights and we’re mixing it with the best in Australia, and the world, pretty much.
“We’re not far off. We’ll go back to the drawing board and work on a few things.”
Ryan will now take some time off to recover from the bout but he’s already eyeing off another fight.
The boxer was hopeful of having a hometown fight in October.
“They’re trying to get a pretty big name opponent here and hopefully a title fight for me,” Ryan said.
It would give Ryan another chance to fight in front of his home crowd half a year after Black ‘N’ Blue Boxing Gunnedah hosted the successful Bad Intentions Three at the Gunnedah Hall in April.
“The crowd give you that little bit extra and on your home turf it’s a bit more motivating,” Ryan said.
